Diocese of Venice

Live Build for Website

Susan and Roger,

Hi.  Per our conversation earlier this week, here is a link to the live build in progress:  http://dioceseofvenice.diocesanweb.com/

We have incorporated and updated many of the requests we last spoke about.  A lot of the interior pages are complete and/or coming along.  As of today, there are just a few items on the home page that are still in progress -- specifically the video in the background of the header and the "I want to learn more about..." clickable scroller.

Lastly, and as you will see, the top navigation does disappear per Roger's email earlier today.

Other than than, let us know your thoughts.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

-Kevin Ferguson

Hello,

The DOV will send a site map very soon - working on it now. This is the layout for the Faith Formation Page, which needs a new photo - and the layout to be similar one of the mock up inside pages you sent us. For the Meet the Team section - since we are not doing photos, we can just have the names and contact information for each team member.

The content for this is being built as we speak! Will send it soon.

Thank you!

This is a newer version of the Faith Formation page sent to us. We will have Photos coming soon. Under Frequently asked questions - can we have the answers appear in a text box that closes up?

Also, on the calendar of events for the Faith Formation page - can we just filter from our main calendar and have the evangelization events live on this page? We'll also need room for videos on her page too.

Thank you!

Susan,

We have planned on doing all Frequently Asked Question pages in the way you have described (click to open). This way the pages won't look so cluttered and there is not an unnecessary number of links/pages required for a FAQ.  Answers to the questions should be given to us in the next week or so, if possible.

As for the calendar of events for the Faith Formation page, yes! I have gone ahead and added a "Event Type Category" for Faith Formation, so any event added to the Faith Formation category will automatically show up on the Adult Faith Formation page.

When possible, could you send me the letters by Bob on Baptism and Confession?
I have already made the Marriage, Communion & Confirmation pages based off his letters, but have left the Baptism and Confession pages blank for now.

Thanks and keep the information coming!

The Event Type Category is a great idea for events in the calendar, Veronica! Thank you.

Wherever possible, when we have a list of objects, we’d rather that not be a text/html list on a regular page but instead be a library of objects that can metadata associated with them (like categories can be assigned to calendar items).

An example is perhaps a documents library for Word or PDF documents posted on our site.

In this instance, we prefer there to be a ‘library’ of documents that we can assign metadata to like:

* keywords (e.g. school-related, Safe Environment, Financial, Confirmation, baptism, HR, risk management, religious education, field trip, etc.)
* type (e.g. Form, Policy, Guideline, Process, Flyer, Newsletter, Report)
* audience (e.g. volunteers, clergy, bookkeepers, business managers, principles, teachers, DREs, general).

This centralized document library can be filtered by our customers according to any of the above and we could address items directly via a link if/where needed.

This is a change from how we manage forms today, which are Word or PDF uploads to WordPress which we then link on pages somewhere, while that pdf sits in a directory forever, becomes outdated, and gets forgotten. ☹

The priest ‘list’ is yet another example where we would prefer to add priests to a directory whereby each entry can have metadata / fields associated (e.g. role/title, location, assignment, etc.) instead of the bland, text-based, and difficult to manage list we have on our legacy site now for clergy. The bland list (pun intended) of examples includes:

* Clergy (taken care of in the clergy directory)
* Deacons
* Sisters
* Brothers
* Forms/policy/guidelines
* Events (taken care of in the Calendar)
* Parishes (taken care of in the parish locator)
* Schools (taken care of in the school locator)

With any of these lists/libraries, it would be ideal to be able to build links that show a ‘pre-filtered’ view of the list according to a given field or keyword. Let’s use the forms library as an example:

1. The Safe Environment page can have a link or image on it that reads “Click here for Safe Environment forms, processes, and guidelines”
2. When clicked, this would direct the browser to open a new tab to display the document library.
3. The library would appear in the new tab but be ‘pre-filtered’ to show documents with [type = (“Forms” AND/OR “Processes” AND/OR “Guidelines”) AND (Category=“Safe Environment”)]
TO THE CLIENT Veronica Alvarado, Project Manager at Diocesan
Roger,

This is a great idea and would definitely help to keep the website up-to-date and extremely organized.

We are starting to look for a plugin that will go through the media library for documents with the tags and categories, similar to what you thought of.

I'll keep you posted on our search for the perfect plugin!

Again, such a great idea. I'm so glad you thought of this!

Thank you for the time today on the DOV website. The calendar below is an example of a Word Press plug in we discussed in earlier meetings, as well as today. If possible, we want to get to this, or as close as possible. We like the vibrancy of each photo with a quick title/date, time view.

Also, the migration of data - you mention we are at budget, but I'm not clear at what point this would kick in. What is left to migrate after that? How can we ensure we are not left holding a lot of data not brought over? Any clarity you can provide would be helpful.

The site is looking very beautiful - and can't wait to go live!

Thank you!

Kevin,

I believe Susan mentioned to you that we will be showing the site off a bit at a leadership meeting later today (2:00pm EDT). A few questions, and I understand if it's not possible in the short timeframe to do these:

1. Have the video on the homepage loop instead of stop?
2. Add an image to the Events that are currently in the calendar?
3. Change the default view of that calendar to one of these:
* http://demo.myeventon.com/tile-event-list/
* Tile View with Event Details Below (about 1/4th the way down on this page: http://demo.myeventon.com/)

Peace!

Thank you Vernoica for the prompt work!

The Chancellor and all of the diocesan department heads had a chance to view the site (I let them know that we’re still working on it of course). I mentioned how helpful they all were and how great a partner Diocesan has been. 😊

Everyone loved it and found it so refreshing!!

I got very minor feedback about how we represent names and email addresses for staff. I told them we hadn’t landed on a standard yet. Here is the feedback and let me know if I should send them in a separate email for tracking purposes:

* For titles, the professional/appropriate way of representing them is by either putting them before the name (prefix) or putting them after the name. For example, it should either be Dr. Volodymyr Smeryk OR Volodymyr Smeryk, J.C.D., J.D., M.B.A., M.A. (note that the degrees are in descending order). This was new to most of us and recommended by our superintendent of schools. We will finalize the decision soon, but leaning towards only having the suffixes and no prefix titles, with the exception of Priests, Sisters, etc. that may have a prefix (like Rev.) and a suffix that includes their order.
* Email addresses should be viewable vs. included as a button on the site. Some people like to copy/paste the address instead of having a button try to open an email app that may not be installed on the computer. A clickable mailto: link may be the best way. I’d actually prefer a way of making the email addresses an image of the text to help minimize people scraping sites to grab email addresses. But I’m not sure if there is a plugin or other way of having Wordpress do that. So, we’d stick with simple mailto: links.

These other points of feedback didn’t come up in the meeting (I avoided them during the demo):

* The screen doesn’t show the buttons below the video banner because the go off of the bottom of the page if someone isn’t running resolution less than 1680. Can we either 1) have the buttons overlap the video to make sure they fit; 2) make the video ‘less tall’ so the buttons slide up; 3) other?
* The top menu seems to grown/shrink as the site is navigated and sometimes doesn’t render correctly in Firefox or IE. Check the sample site again for example of how we’d prefer it worked: http://stelizabethseton.org
* When viewing the page in IE 11, the logo is huge and overlaps the words on the banner video. Also, the buttons are all moved to the right (see image below).

Hi Susan,

I've adjusted the viewport size a little to minimize the background showing through for a 16:9 ratio video.

Like you mentioned the featured image shows while the video is loading, so I've changed it to a solid dark grey so it doesn't stand out.

Lastly, I noticed the video you've added is 62MB, which can greatly affect load times, especially on slower, cellular connections. Are you able to optimize the video when exporting? There are also online tools for this, including: https://clipchamp.com/en/video-compressor
