Holy Spirit - Crown Point / Hebron, IN

Post-Training Update

Good morning everyone,

After the training yesterday, there are some things I wanted to clarify and give a quick overview of:
Login Information
Templates
  • Secondary
    • This will allow you to add tabs within a page.
  • Columns and Rows
    • This will allow you to place your content in two columns.
  • Sacraments
    • As seen on the Sacraments pages, you can add text in the main area, then "Add Row" to add an image on the right, with text that goes with it.
  • St. Helen or Holy Spirit
    • This will change the header color, but you can only add things in the "normal" editing space. There will not be tabs or columns.

Things We are Working On
  • The yellow font of forms (great for the contact page, not for other forms).
  • The calendar page will be dynamic (currently an image).
  • Limiting the slider to 6 slides (and making sure the images stay full width when adding more than 3 images).

Questions I Have
  • Laura, please send me the embed code for your calendar.
  • What other users should I add and what kind of permissions should they have (Karen and Danielle, specifically).
    • Please give me names, usernames and emails of any users you would like added. Father included.
  • When is your "deadline" for changes and edits that you will be doing?
    • St. Helen information is mostly blank.
    • Holy Spirit needs to check all their information & update as needed.
  • When is a reasonable date to launch?

If you have any other questions, please let me know,

FROM THE CLIENT Fr. Tom Mischler, Pastor at Catholic Family of the Holy Spirit
Sorry I missed the training at St. Helen’s. Life in two parishes gets complicated. Rochelle can bring me up to speed. Laura and I have talked about the missing St. Helen Content. That will be coming to you next week.

Rochelle and I have been talking about providing Holy Spirit and St. Helen Pictures, i.e. to replace the mountain scene on the homepage. That may help to define the two parish approach to this webpage.

I am assuming the text below the sliders can be edited? The vision statement needs to convey the unity and strength of both parishes working together. I want to avoid any implication that one parish is greater and another lesser. We are equal partners in this endeavor.

Since Laura only works 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday) maybe we should set the edit deadline for February 27 or 28th?

Could we then plan to launch the new webpage the weekend of March 3rd & 4th??

I have some ideas to create some excitement for the launch prior to the actual launch date.

I like what is developing and only some minor text edits seem necessary. The overall structure looks good to me. Great work & thank you for getting us this far.

Fr.. Tom
TO THE CLIENT Veronica Alvarado, Project Manager at Diocesan

Father,

No problem about the training. I used to work for a parish that had two Churches, so I know how that goes. Always something to do!

You can send the missing St. Helen content and photos at any time. A neat idea for the first slide photo is a group of parishioners from both churches (you in the middle) with their arms around each other or just standing in a group. It shows unite and people will see faces that they recognize.

Here are examples of what I had in mind:

For the vision statement, it is something that is hardcoded in, but Diocesan can change the text at any time. We hard code it in so that no one will ever have access to either mess it up or delete it (this has happened too many times to count!). So whenever you have the final mission statement ready, please send it to us and we can update it for you!

Your dates sound reasonable to me.
  • Tuesday, February 27 is the day that content will be completed (I will call and confirm)
  • Wednesday, February 28 (after 2pm)- Thursday, March 1 are the days that we will begin the launch.
The official domain change will not occur until Thursday afternoon. This gives us a couple extra days to figure things out, just in case anything takes a long time to transfer, or if we run into any issues.

Thank you!

Rochelle,

I see what you mean. These areas are actually coded a certain way, but I will speak to Micheal about fixing this, especially since the content may change over time.
He is currently out of the office until Monday, but I will speak with him about it the morning he is back.

Let me know if there is anything else that you have noticed or if you need any more help with the website.

Yes ours on our current website is in widgets and i'm familiar with them.
FROM THE CLIENT Rochelle MacNemera, Catholic Family of the Holy Spirit
Sorry but every time I'm looking I find something new.

--- on the Outreach Page there is no option to choose Holy Spirit or St Helen's like the others so that will need to be corrected. Currently its only Holy Spirits Info.

--- The Calendar Page ???? where is that daily stuff coming from for the weekly calendar?

--- Mass times still needs fixing. With both parishes highlighted blue how can you remember which parish you are on

and under Mass times for Holy Spirit. Baptism info is inaccurate. We don't do baptisms every 4th Sunday. We schedule them 4 times a year.

Also when editing pages I thought we had more text options like text size and color.

Looking forward to getting ting this up and running.

Thanks and Have a blessed day, Rochelle

Rochelle,

No worries! We would much rather you find these quirks now than later.

Outreach
The landing page for Outreach is something that you can create and use the other landing pages as models. When you have 10-15 minutes, give me a call and we can create it together.

Calendar
This is still just a static image that will be replaced with you actual calendar events. For now, I have added the events below the image so that you can make sure they correspond with your calendars. This should be

Mass Times
Micheal will be changing this page to be editable just as any other page is (text editor). Also, he is aware and working on a solution for the the buttons staying blue after switching parishes.

Editing Pages
In creating websites, we strive to create websites that allow you to have the creative freedom that you need while also ensuring that your website is easy for users to read. Nearly all website usability guidelines say that no more than 4 different font colors/sizes should be used, otherwise users are confused as to what content is important.
Here are a couple of articles that outline the use of font for a good website:
For your use, we have given you different headings and font colors.

If you have any other concerns, please let me know.

You know how we made pages for the boxes above the menu options for giving facebook etc. Well its back to the way it was. Going directly to HS stuff.

Rochelle,

Yes, our developer is still working on this. Unfortunately, we are a little swamped at the moment, so we are trying to get a full list of changes, so that we can fix them all at once.

As discussed yesterday, we will make sure that the giving button goes to http://catholicfamilyhs.diocesanweb.com/giving/ and we will create a single, long Facebook button that goes to http://catholicfamilyhs.diocesanweb.com/facebook/.

I'll be sure to send you a message when the changes are completed!

How many sliders are we set up for. It looks like three right now. Ive changed two and I have 4 more to do. Can I add them by just adding row?

I know on our old website the number of sliders we wanted had to be set in widgets. Can you get that increased to 6 since I do not have access to do so?

Thanks, Rochelle
FROM THE CLIENT Rochelle MacNemera, Catholic Family of the Holy Spirit
If we can have access to widgets when we go live, since I have been working with them on another website at this time I would prefer to be the only one to have access once you guys give it so that not all admins have access to it.

I know how easy it would be for someone to mess up the current structure of the website.

For the time being Laura will be creating her sliders in powerpoint and send to me and I will create the sliders and add them.
TO THE CLIENT Veronica Alvarado, Project Manager at Diocesan

Rochelle,

I am sorry to throw you off your game, but after trying to fix your current slider, we are actually going to be switching over to using the plugin Metaslider. The slider we have right now on your homepage keeps messing up once you add more than 5 slides. Fortunately, this plugin can easily make it so that you are the only one with access to change the slider images.

When you have the time, please give me a call and I can show you how to do it. Thankfully, it is just as simple as before with the only difference being where you go to change the images.

I am so sorry for all the confusion and changes. We are just trying to find the easiest way for you guys to update your website, while also make sure that it works and looks flawless.

Thank you,

On the bottom of the home page where the new is..... there is all news, Holy Spirit and St Helen's

It's confusing. Only three from each show so is there a way that if you select all news it would direct you to the news page?

I think once they've scrolled to the bottom for news they won't go back up to select the news page because I think they will assume they just got all the news.
TO THE CLIENT Veronica Alvarado, Project Manager at Diocesan

Rochelle,

Are you thinking that maybe "All News" "Holy Spirit" and "St. Helen" are clickable links that go to separate pages with their specific news?
OR are you thinking that on the right side of the third news event, there is an arrow indicating that there is more news?

I think you have a very good point, but I want your opinion on how to best solve this.

FROM THE CLIENT Rochelle MacNemera, Catholic Family of the Holy Spirit
I like that I think I like the bottom option.
FROM THE CLIENT Rochelle MacNemera, Catholic Family of the Holy Spirit
Okay, I need your advice... I have attached what St Helen's sent over for the slider they wanted. I told Laura no way as a slider. So I am going to create a new slide.
where should I have it go to access this? she does also have it in a publisher doc but I know we'll have to make it a pdf to upload it. I was thinking of linking it to news page but with it being split not sure how it would look. I don't want to change the split news page because I love the way it showcases both to try to get more people to each other's events.
TO THE CLIENT Veronica Alvarado, Project Manager at Diocesan
I honestly think they should add these events to their calendar, but if they are wanting to do it as a a slider, I think there are a couple options:
  1. Save this as a PDF and put it above their posts on the News page (it will look like a news post, but on the editing side it is just a link to the document

    1. Then, for the homepage slider, you can have a "St. Helen Lenten Calendar" image that clicks through to the PDF file as well.
  2. Create week by week slider images for the weeks of Lent that do not link to the original document

Something that may help with your banner designs is this website:
https://www.canva.com/

It is what I use to create the slider images I use on my personal website.
Of course, there are some images that are not free, but they make it very easy to create simple, beautiful sliders.

Here is one that I made in less than 5 minutes:

Here is what the editing side looks like after your pic your image size and the preset template. You can see the template one that I used. To personalize it, all I did was change the text and add an image the cross!

Hello Veronica,

Rochelle & Laura are keeping apprised of the developments on the Webpage. I have one correction/addition to request. It is simple and is only subtracting one text and replacing with another.

On the Home Page below the slider its currently reads:

The vision of the Holy Spirit Church is to invite all to the experience the ever present Kingdom of God here on earth.

I would like to remove that sentence and replace it with this:

Welcome to our new Webpage. As a combined Catholic Family serving the people of two parishes, we offer this combined website to help serve you better and to draw our two parishes closer together.

I hope this will fit ok and to help us when we launch our new website to the parishes.

Rochelle,

We added the View All button, but had to add it to the bottom. I know we wanted to put it to the right of the third news post, but when you visited the page on mobile, it would squish the post on the left side of your phone screen and distort the images and text.

Now when you visit the website on mobile, it looks like this:

I think this looks a lot better than if the image were to the left and overlapping/distorted text.  Plus, it keeps everything centered and focused, no matter the screen size.

Veronica,

Father Tom would like the following videos added to the Pastoral Council page of Holy Spirit ministries and to the Counsel and Commissions page for St. Helen.

I tried to embed them on the page to make the videos smaller but they wouldn't embed. I then tried to add them by the url and they loaded to the page the videos were to large and covered up the side menu.

Please help as I am not sure how to upload them so they are not so large. Not sure if the width of the side menu could be reduced.

Good Morning Rochelle,

In order to embed a code, you must switch to the "text" view of the page content. Here are the instructions:

  1. Find text box you wish to edit
  2. Place your cursor where you would like to embed the video
  3. Switch to the "Text" view
  4. Paste in the YouTube embed code, changing dimensions if necessary
  5. Switch back to "Visual" view & update

That will allow you to change the size of the video to the dimensions you would like.

Let me know if this helps you!
