Events: EMS to WordPress
The client has requested a calendar feed that will ultimately be displayed like Exhibit A.
The client is quite attached to their custom EMS Calendar, so unless we can convince them to transition to G Suite (whether in whole or in part [like with calendars that display information for a particular group]), we'll probably have to craft a solution with that.
I have some questions about this display.
I have some questions about this display.
- How attached are they to this proof, or are they willing to deviate from it? I'm guessing they'll be somewhat flexible with this, but we should ask them this directly.
- How much control do they have over the EMS XML output? Are the fields currently being output all they can do, or can they manipulate this data. If they can manipulate the data, to what extent is that possible? Can they change the way the dates are displayed and create separate outputs by—for example—group? If not, we'll probably need to use something like WP All Import (http://www.wpallimport.com/order-now/) with ACF, which would cost $199, plus the labor to initialize and configure the same.
- Can there be separate outputs for different groups and/or to be displayed on different parts of the website? I already touched on this, but can the sorting and filtering be done on their end? Said another way, how closely can they provide us this data in a structure and format that matches Exhibit A (or its successor)?
- How does this XML get updated? I presume this is some sort of automated feed. Otherwise, how does this data get updated? What kind of maintenance would there be? Would they need to upload new XML? Would they need to organize this data into categories/taxonomies?
- Are they opposed to outputting this data to G Suite and/or setting up a few limited calendars in Google to serve as a data source for the calendars they need? It wouldn't be too difficult to match Exhibit A from G Suite and Simple Calendar. Also, the following links may be helpful for this: https://www.integromat.com/en/integrations/google-calendar/xml and https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31502384/feed-xml-to-google-calendar.
I'm sure more questions will arise as we work through this, but here are some starting points for us.
