Holy Family Orlando News & Events Questions

Hello Christine,

Upon reviewing the website, we realized that while you have Parish News (WordPress posts) on the homepage, the archive page only displays the Facebook feed, so no access to the WP post archive. Instead of displaying Parish News as WordPress posts on the homepage, we may want to consider simply displaying the Facebook Posts similar to the images below. Of course, we can set them to display with the FB page title, comments, likes, share button, etc. visible or hidden, as needed.

Here is a quick mockup of what that would look like with your images.
https://diocesan.prevue.it/view/3h2g29

If you prefer to keep the WordPress posts on the homepage under Parish News, then we would need to figure out how to access both the WP posts archive and the News & Events page.

Diocesan recommends using the Facebook posts with free-sizing posts since Holy Family is already active on their Facebook and means that there is one less item to update. Moreover, your posts are generally all the same height since you are consistent in having a photo/photos in your posts.

Let me know what you think,

Veronica,

Christine and I would much rather keep the WP posts in the Parish News spot on the homepage. WP Posts under Parish News are extensions of calendar items that we want to highlight and put out more information. Occasionally we have other news that we post here as well (Holy Day schedules, Hurricane closings, etc.).

As of now, I use the Facebook posts as more of an educational and local/state/world news/features source, which would be good to have on the News and Events page. But I don’t want that to take precedence over the Parish News.

Regarding the WP Posts archive, would it be possible to imbed that within the News & Events Page the same way you do the Facebook pages? Would that solve the problem?

One question Christine has is this scenario:

* We have a specific event where we want to say “Go to HolyFamilyOrlando.com/SpecialEvent.” We typically handle this as a Page, because doing it as a Post would make the link HolyFamilyOrlando.com/news/SpecialEvent. Would it be possible to set up a Page to show up in the Post area? Or does WordPress not allow that? The way I’ve handled in our current version of the website is to do a Post, then link out of the post to the special page. The challenge with that is updating info on both Post and Page.

Yours in Christ,

Lynn

Good morning Lynn,

I've gone through the items and I think I have everything in terms of decisions made, updates we will make, and additional questions:

WP Posts vs. Facebook
I have let the developer know that you have chosen to display WP Posts on the homepage.
Question: We can replace the FB feed with WP posts on the News & Events page so that it would look similar to how Sacred Heart uses their WP posts below the other information. Is this what you would like us to do?

Posts & Pages on Homepage Post Slider
As you mentioned, there is a plugin that allows for all pages to have option to select a post category, resulting in displaying both the pages and posts on the homepage Parish News slider. This will eliminate the need for redirects or duplication of posts/pages.
The developer is adding this now and testing it with the slider.
I will let you know once this has been completed.

Let me know which feed we would like to use on the News & Events page and we will work on that next.

Thank you,

The homepage's Parish News section now has the option for posts or pages to display, as long as the category is selected.

The posts and pages have retained their layout with the featured image displaying above for pages and within the content for posts.
We have left these two examples there for you to view and test.

Veronica,

Sacred Heart’s looked good. Can we do both FB feed and WP announcements?

Could we run the announcements in one column, then the FB feed in another column?

Good morning Lynn,

Talking with Blake (the designer), our concern is that the News & Events page will look overcrowded, lopsided (since WP posts and FB post heights wouldn't line up on a post-column or left/right column basis), and stack for an extremely long page on mobile devices. Additionally, as people were to click "Load More", there would be development issues loading one side and not the other or loading both at the same time.

If we are wanting to display both WP Posts and the Facebook feed, I would consider displaying the FB feed on the right side of the single posts, as Sacred Heart has done here. This allows the Facebook posts to be there for the people that want to take that step further into parish engagement without overwhelming them on the News & Events page.

Good afternoon,

Our developer, Kyle, was able to get in touch with EMS. They let us know that there are, in fact, unique identifiers per post but it is something that needs to be displayed in the XML file. EMS let him know that this is something that HFO would need to pull.

With this in mind, I would like to propose a screen-share meeting in which Kyle accesses your EMS calendar program to see how you are exporting the XML file and, hopefully, find where to add the unique identifier to the XML output.

Christine and Dan, are you available tomorrow, Thursday? I am busy from 9:30 am -12:00, noon, but am otherwise open.

Hi Veronica –
I spoke with Lynn and he will be on the call since he’s the one who will be handling the day-to-day for events on the site. I’ve also left a hardcopy request in Dan’s office for him to be on the call as well, since he’s currently the only one with full access to EMS. For future reference, please make sure you address with Dan and Lynn any need for Lynn to have certain EMS access levels so that we can expedite any future expected needs for this process.

Thanks much.

Please send the meeting invite links and call-in number for 12:30pm Thursday January 16.

Blessings!
