If you put in <br> or <br/> it will display on the visual editor, but as soon as you click publish, it deletes. 
If we can't figure out why this is happening (same issue with adding 
Maybe we want to add a shortcode that will automatically add 50px of empty space or something like that.

I created a test page, and I can't replicate the error. Maybe the TinyMCE Advanced plugin fixed the problem?
