👋 Question about Privacy Policy - Diocese of Scranton for Diocese of Scranton Staff
Hi Veronica and Ryan
If you think the following plugin is safe to use on our website, would you mind installing it?
https://wordpress.org/plugins/auto-terms-of-service-and-privacy-policy/
It's supposed to make it easy to produce a privacy policy and terms of service on a site.
Please let me know.
Thank you!
Connie
I've gone ahead and installed the plugin so you can test it. The plugin itself does the job, but I must admit I have my reservations on it.
I don't see any gaping holes or concerns from a security perspective. However, there are a few caveats and/or things I noticed that you should be aware of.
1) The obvious disclaimer, " WP AutoTerms is provided with the purpose of helping you with compliance. While we do our best to provide you useful information to use as a starting point, nothing can substitute professional legal advice in drafting your legal agreements and/or assisting you with compliance. We cannot guarantee any conformity with the law, which only a lawyer can do. We are not attorneys. We are not liable for any content, code, or other errors or omissions or inaccuracies. This plugin provides no warranties or guarantees."
2) The plugin creates it's own custom post type. Makes sense from a composition perspective, but the result will be pages with "wpautoterms" in the URL, and "Legal Pages" in the breadcrumb. For example, https://www.dioceseofscranton.org/wpautoterms/privacy-policy for the URL, and Home / Legal Pages / Privacy Policy for a breadcrumb.
2a) You could purchase the premium version for $39 and customize the "wpautoterms" slug, but it's still going to be a custom post type address.
I personally would prefer to have a lawyer draft the appropriate statements. It that isn't an option for whatever reason, and you still wanted to use WP AutoTerms, then I would recommend using it for composition only. Once established, copying the page to the standard page, so that the page is a stand alone page (ie About)
I appreciate all the analysis and advice, very much!
I will check it out and let you know what we decide to do.
Thanks again,

The Diocese of Syracuse looks to have a pretty good privacy policy: https://www.syracusediocese.org/privacy-policy/
I was thinking of adopting it (with input of legal counsel). Will our site be using cookies? Are those paragraphs applicable?
Thanks again!
