Good morning, Madeline -
It appears that your new website is progressing nicely!  I have a note that says you'd like to transfer your domain to Diocesan?

The first step in this process is to provide us with the one of the following:
  1. Domain login information
  2. Domain contact information
And, with either of these options, we do need this information in order to launch the site, as we'll make changes to your host records on launch day.  I find it's best to start gathering the information now, rather than wait too much longer!

Domain Login Information
If you would like Diocesan to initiate the transfer for you, we ask that you please send us the following information:
  • Name of Hosting Company
  • Login URL
  • Username/Email
  • Password
Please note that once Diocesan initiates the transfer, we may need your domain account owner to forward an email that they will receive. 

Domain Contact Information
If you have internal or contracted IT services that you would like us to direct in the transfer process, we ask that you please send us the following information:
  • Name of IT Company (if any)
  • Name of Individual
  • Email of Company/Individual
  • Phone Number of Company/Individual
  • Account Privileges (if any)

Good morning, Madeline -

I did a little research on the process to transfer the domain and I found that with OSV, we'll need to contact their support in order to migrate the domain away from them.  

Because of that, I think we may want to wait until we get closer to the actual website launch to make that move - we do not want them accidentally shutting off your current website or interrupting service before the new website is ready.

I'll keep this task on my list, and when we are about 3-4 weeks out from the launch date, we can contact OSV and let them know what we need - I'd be happy to be on the call with you if it's helpful, or I can write out what we'd need from them.  I'm just afraid that because I'm not the domain owner, they may not be able to work with me directly.

Are you in the office on Monday?  That might be a good time to call them and get the process going!  

Are you able to do a conference or three-way call with the phone in your office?  I'm working from home and use a cellphone so I am not sure if I have that capability from my cell...we can always connect by Zoom and then use a speakerphone, if needed - we'll find a way!

Good morning, Madeline -
I had a few spare minutes so I gave OSV a call and asked their tech support what their general process is for shutting down a website and moving a domain from them - mainly for my own knowledge as I've never worked with them on this type of task before, and I'm sure I'll work with them again on other sites.

I spoke with a really nice man in tech support.  He said just call the number, ask for tech support, and request a Cancel Form.  That will get the process started - they will send you the form to fill out and return.  That is all there is to it!  Their number is (800) 348-2440 and I hit "0" for the switchboard and asked for "website tech support" - she transferred me to tech support - then I hit "2" for church websites.

He said he can help answer any questions you may have (and of course, I can help if you have questions on the form, too!)

He said that while they are sad to see a client go, they are there to help and to not hesitate to call.  I'm also here to help if there are questions on the form about the domain, host records, etc. - just let me know!

Thank you for sending the screenshots!

So on the area that is called Website Details - we want it to say "Transfer Management of this domain into my care" - not let it expire.

That way, they will send you what is called an "EPP/Transfer Code" (or sometimes "Auth Code/Authorization Code") and that is what we'll use to transfer the domain to our eNom account.  We don't want to let it expire, it's really hard (and expensive!) to get back a domain once it expires.

We don't want to decommission the site until after the launch so we may need to ask them to change the host records for us so that we can launch, and then decommission/transfer the domain after that.  

Veronica may weigh in on this, but I'd probably set that date for 1-2 weeks after our launch - that would give you a little safety net, to ensure everything you want from the old site is done and that we've launched successfully - and then we'll ask them to send us the transfer code at that time.

Let me know if you have any questions - I think you've almost got it, just change the portion about wanting to transfer the domain, and add the date.

I'm going to verify with their web support person that they'll be able to make the host record change for us on launch day - I don't foresee any issues with that, it's exactly what we'd do for a client so I'm certain that is their process, as well.

I'm thinking they'll just email you an EPP code, eventually, which you can forward to us (webdepartment@diocesan.com) so that we can transfer the domain.  Thanks so much for starting this process off!  Let me know if you have any questions.
