Hi Veronica:
Thanks for the session…now we have to self-teach!

BTW…along with the incorrect map at the bottom of our home page, I also just noticed that the “copyright” line says: 2018ICC…Marysville, PA.
Obviously that is another significant correction while you are at it!

Good Monday, Veronica:
As I was experimenting this morning with our website, somehow I changed a setting (?) so that the Homepage does not appear when the website opens. I was attempting to add a picture to the photo scroll, but in the process of deleting the image from a preview, something happened!

I can see the Homepage is still intact in WordPress, but can't figure out how to restore it to its proper place. I figure I'd stop now for fear of making it worse. At your convenience, can you take a look and correct/let me know what happened, what I did incorrectly.

Donna is busy this week with our parish financial audit-review, so will not have much/any time to play with the site. I have done a couple of things with it, namely adding a welcome video to the Homepage, and hope to continue practicing this week. We will still reach out to you this coming Friday to see whether we launch October 1 or delay that.

Thanks for the assistance,

Hello Father,

Sorry about responding so late. I have been in meetings for the majority of the day.

I saw your homepage and I'm not even quite sure how you changed that settings! We actually have the settings page hidden from you so that things like this don't happen, haha. Thankfully, it was a simple switch back with no damage done.
Your homepage is now back in action!

Let me know if you need anything else as we go through the week.

Thanks for the re-set. I’ll try to be more cautious!

Can you explain to me where I locate & how the specific selections appear in the "Parish Events" sector on the Homepage?

We have the three placements that have been created, but I want to understand where these specific areas are created and/or how they are manipulated as far as replacing/updating this specific content area to appear on the Homepage. I hope my query makes sense...

The Parish Events will display the 3 most recently published posts.
Posts can be added/edited by clicking the Posts button in the black menu on the left hand side when logged in.

Any post added to the "Homepage News & Events" category will be added to your homepage.

Remember, you can set the date for each post to publish and expire:

Hi Veronica:
What do you recommend…

I plan to offer what I’ll call “seasonal” video clips/messages on our website (Advent, Lent, etc.) that would change out every week or so when the time comes (or perhaps something like a “Thanksgiving message,” or “Welcome Back snowbirds”). I don’t currently have a specific thing to post for now…

I’d like them to be immediately visible on the Homepage, since this would give them more prominence and ease of access. So, I’m wondering, what would be the best method to post these in such a way…would I best use the “Homepage Events” option, since this would place the video in one of the three homepage slots we have created? Or do you recommend another way. I would see these as a “featured” item on the Homepage, which would generate more views since this content, in season, would be changing.

Let me know what you suggest…if you get my drift in this question…

Father Ben,

I think it's best left in the place it is now, since it is going to be posted less often than parish events.

Another option is to have it on the right side of the welcome message, but that would require development time, which our developer has estimated at ~1 hour. Since I think this would be best for your website, I have negotiated the discounted rate of $50/hr (initial development is $70/hr) to be billed separately.

Here is a quick mockup of what it would look like:

Let me know what you would like to do!

So looking at the options…I would not intend to delete the “Welcome” video at any time from the Homepage (perhaps it would be redone once a year & reloaded to keep it up to date). What I’m looking for is placement of these “occasional’ or “seasonal” messages (videos), while still keeping the Welcome video in its place on a more permanent basis.

Is the suggestion here to redevelop the page to move the current Welcome video to the place you illustrate below, which then frees up space & allows for these additional seasonal videos to be placed where the current Welcome is now located on the page? Or do I completely misunderstand???

Ah okay! I thought you meant that you were going to update your welcome video with the occasional/seasonal message.

In that case, there are two ways we can add your videos as posts:

1. Redirect Post to Youtube Video

  1. Add New Post
  2. Add Title
  3. Add Text
  4. Check Make Redirect Active
  5. Paste in the link to your YouTube video
  6. Set Featured Image
  7. Add Category as Homepage News & Events
  8. Publish
Everything is the same as a normal post, but by making the redirect active and putting in a link, anyone that clicks on that post will automatically be taken to the YouTube Video.

2. Add Video in Post

Another option is to simply paste the video into the content. With a YouTube video, you can simply paste the video's URL and it will automatically embed in the content.
  1. Add New Post
  2. Add Title
  3. Paste YouTube video into text
  4. Set Featured Image
  5. Add Category as Homepage News & Events
  6. Publish

As for what I suggested beforehand, I still think this may be a good idea for your website so people will not have to scroll so far down for the homepage posts. Plus, this would get rid of some white space in your welcome section.

Thank you,

Veronica:
Good day...

Because our financial audit this past week was generally disruptive of business as usual, and made for Donna's inability to even look at the website, I think we best delay the launch one week-let's shoot for Monday, October 8. I have continued, as you can see, adding/re-doing some material. I think I'm getting slightly comfortable enough to at least get the site launched.

In the meantime, I do have a couple of questions:

1. What do we do with our current/soon-to-be former site? Contact the company to remove or what?
2. What is the actual URL for the new website once it is launched? icparishmb.diocesanweb.com???
3. Will Donna & I continue to access administration of the site, once launched, using the same site/credentials we have been using for this trial period? What will we do if/when we add someone else with administrative capabilities?
4. I updated the "Music Ministry" page this morning (I had some trouble negotiating this, but ended up with it done right), but I cannot figure out how to eliminate the large graphic (music notes) that is sitting under the header...I don't see it on the edit page...can you help/explain?
5. When clicking "Add a New Page"...let's say while I am editing a current page...does the new page become an addition to the page I'm working with (say I'm working on Music Ministry and I "add a page"), or does it become it's own page and then I assign a "place" for it? If the answer to this question needs for than an email explanation, we can talk about it when we do our final "pre-launch" training.

I think that's all for now. I'm leaving the office shortly for the remainder of the day, but I will be in touch Monday this coming week to set a time to do a short follow-up training before blasting off October 8.

Continuing thanks for the help and effort thus far...
Have a good weekend,

Good (late) morning Father,

I totally understand. I have rescheduled the tentative launch for Monday, October 8. We can discuss again next Thursday.
  1. Once your website is launched, you can cancel your service with eCatholic. That way they don't bill you for a site you no longer use.
  2. We will schedule the launch of your new website with the Diocese of Orlando, since they are in control of your domain. Once it is launched, the domain will be https://icparishmb.org/, but going to that domain will display your new website.
  3. After launch, you will log in at https://icparishmb.org/melbournebeach and login with the same credentials as you are currently using. Adding new users is done through Diocesan for security reasons.
  4. The Music Ministry page is a fluke! That image is coming from the "Featured Image" section of the page. Remove the featured image and it will disappear! I have removed it for you.
  5. When you add a new page, regardless of where you click "Add New," it will create a separate page that you can then assign a place for.
If you have any other questions, just let me know. It's what I'm here for!

Good Monday, Veronica:
Hope you had a good weekend.

I've been doing on-line research for expanding my understanding of using WordPress. Today I did so regarding embedding PowerPoint presentations into pages/posts. Is our site currently set for me to do so? (I have been reading about "Plugins"?) Generally, I would intend that these PP programs to be uploaded from my own computer files (although I see you can also use Google Drive).

I already have & occasionally will have in the future PP presentations I have offered live at various parish workshops that will be good to share with the wider website audience. For example, I recently presented a morning of reflection for our parish liturgical ministers, and due to tech difficulties, was unable to show/use the PP I had prepared. In this instance, being able to make this available via the website is even more useful!

How would I go about embedding a PP so that it has full functionality in terms of someone being able to click on it and view the slides?

I also see your designer did not yet get to the repositioning of the Welcome text/video. I still think we will be good to go for that Oct. 8 launch, but will keep you posted as this week progresses.

Best,
Fr. Ben

Hello Father,

I had my sister and dad fly up to see me for the weekend, so it was a wonderful weekend despite the cold, wet weather. I hope your weekend was nicer.

First, I want to let you know that the new Welcome section layout is literally on our to-do list. In fact, our developer is actually working on your website today and tomorrow to ensure that it is mobile responsive and ready to go, changes and all.

As for embedding/displaying PowerPoint presentations, Diocesan charges a $35 one-time fee for adding plugins after your WordPress training. This accounts for the time it takes us to upload, install, set up, test, and train you on the plugin.

I am thinking that we could use this plugin. It seems to be the best for uploading PowerPoint documents, either straight from your computer or from Google Drive. Plus it is one of the most up-to-date plugins, works well with our websites, and will not break your website.

If you'd like me to install it, please let me know and I will do it this afternoon!

As I will definitely be wanting to make use of this feature, please go ahead and install/make this capability available for our site, charge accordingly, and once ready, perhaps you can briefly outline the steps for uploading (to see if they are in synch with what I have come across in researching the steps on-line).

Father Ben,

I have installed the plugin and also wanted to let you know that the homepage changes have been made! You may have to hard refresh the page to see the changes (hold down Control and click F5).

Here are the PowerPoint Embedder Steps:

  1. Edit the page or post you'd like the PowerPoint to go and click Add Document
  2. Click Upload Document
  3. If you have already uploaded the document, click on the document and click select.
  4. If you have not already uploaded the document, this is where it gets slightly confusing. Click Upload Files and select your file. It will then upload it, but not display it. In this example, I have already uploaded the file and it is selected, even though it does not show up.
So once you have uploaded the file, the information for your new file comes up on the right. Click Select.
  5. You can change the settings accordingly and it will generate a shortcode below.
  6. Click Insert.
  7. Click Publish or Update to save your changes.
Here is the page that I was using to test. The first PowerPoint file I found on my computer was a calculus PowerPoint,
If you have any questions, by all means, let me know.

I did not work on this page, so did not make any adjustments (it was there fine and dandy earlier today when I was on the site), so was curious as to what may have happened to it…gremlins?
