Domain Transfer

Hello Dave,

You have let us know that you would like your https://www.holyspiritmo.org/ domain to be transferred to Diocesan.

There are two ways that we can go about doing this:
  1. Provide Diocesan with your domain login credentials and we will initiate the transfer OR
  2. Your current domain owner can initiate the transfer

1. Provide Diocesan with Login
Below are the things we need for the login:
  • Login URL
  • Username/email
  • Password
Once Diocesan has initiated the transfer, you will still need to send Diocesan the Authorization (EPP) code (emailed to domain owner).  If you believe that there will be an issue with this, please let us know.

2. We Will Initiate Domain Transfer
  1. Unlock your domain
  2. Send us the Authorization (EPP) Code
  3. Send to email webdepartment@diocesan.com
  4. Diocesan initiates transfer
  5. You confirm the transfer
  6. Transfer complete!

Let us know if you have any questions or are having trouble finding who your current domain owner is.

Is this something we do at the end of the design process or at the beginning?

I need to consult with my IT expert to see how this affects our email addresses, since those are with Office 365. I think there are some settings in Office I will need to change along with the domain transfer. I’ll get back to you shortly.

Good morning, David -
The domain transfer can be done before or after the new site launches - we usually perform the transfer before launch so that we have access to the domain account & host records at launch time.  It helps streamline the process of launching, and we make sure to record screenshots of all of the host records prior to the transfer so that if anything does disappear during the move, we're able to add the records back should an issue arise (but that's very rare, I've found, in my experience.)

That said, as long as you have access to the domain account for launch, we can transfer the domain whenever you prefer - we do need to change the "A" records in order to launch so whether we do that, or your IT person makes the change, either option is fine.

If you have any questions about the process, I'd be happy to try to answer them.  Thank you!

Our domain email accounts are hosted via Office 365; do you know what I need to do on my end to make sure we don’t lose access to our email during the domain transfer?

When first setting up Office 365 for email you generate an MX record to add to the host records - that links your Office 365 account to your domain.  Your domain isn't changing, just the location/company (the "registrar") that holds the domain and typically with a domain transfer all of the records move with the domain to the new holding company.  So the link between O365 and your domain isn't broken, and nothing would need to be done to keep that link at this time.

And I say "typically" because maybe once in a few dozen transfers do we have something happen where the records don't all transfer correctly - and that can affect email from working correctly - but we do ask that you (or me, if I initiate the transfer) take screenshots of all the host records before the transfer so that we can quickly add them back if something like that happens.

I also don't usually update the nameservers during a transfer so all of the host records should transfer right along with the domain name to our registrar.  And again, "should" because one in a great while something does happen where a record might not transfer correctly, but that's a rare occurrence.  If anything is going to happen with emails not working, it's more likely to happen at launch time, when the nameservers get switched over to those in our eNom (our registrar) account, but again, we have the screenshots to make certain that all the records are correctly added at the time of launch.  We do everything in our power to make certain that nothing happens to affect the proper operation of the site and emails prior to launch.

Thank you,

--Mary

Good morning, David -
As launch day is fast approaching, did you decide we should wait to transfer the domain until after launch day, then?

We'll just need to make sure that we (you, or us, or someone in your IT department) are able to log in to the domain account to update the "A" host record at the time of launch, in order to point the domain to the new website.

Thank you,

Hello David,

Thank you for sending us the login information for the domain! That will help us keep a smooth and timely launch schedule.

As a note for launch, it will happen between 9am and 1pm on Tuesday, January 14th. Please refrain from editing anything on the website as the launch can cause errors and delete the content that was edited or not carry over the changes. We will send an email when the site is live to the public. It can take up to 72 hours for the site and changes to propagate around the globe, but usually, the site should be live within a few hours after the site launched.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Cody Armock

Good morning, David -
I initiated the domain transfer yesterday afternoon and it looks like it's already gone through - amazingly fast, I find 3-5 days is typical.

I did take a screenshot of all of your host records before the transfer so we have that as a backup should you notice any issues at all in the next few days.  I wouldn't expect it, but if you do notice any issues with your email, please let us know.

Thank you.
