👋 wpsearch plug-in
Hello Ryan and Veronica,
Currently, the site's search feature does not find any of our Catholic Light editions. They are PDFs in the media library. I did some searching and found a plug-in that claims to make PDFs searchable using the standard Wordpress search tool (which I assume is what you used to build the site search. It looks like it's $99/year -- https://searchwp.com/buy/
Do you have any experience with this, or an alternative you can suggest to make our Catholic Light PDFs searchable on the site?
Thank you!
Connie

This one is a bit tricky as it could go one of several ways. Keep in mind that Wordpress is a Content Management System, and Managing Media is not it's strong suite. Knowledge of wordpress systems are handy here, and I am familiar with the fact that all Media files are also stored as posts in the wordpress tables. They are simply post type of "attachment". Modifying the search to include attachments isn't hard at all.
1) I skimmed over the plugin, and it seems like it would achieve the objective
2) I did some light research on how to achieve this sans plugin, and found a very simple way to adapt the native search to look for Media files, via Attachments. Take a look at this: https://scranton.diocesanweb.org/?s=catholiclight
Since Media files are attachments, you'll notice one extra hoop or click to get to the file link, but again that's because it's an attachment. Additionally, the naming of the files because important. I do not know if the searchwp plugin has that same limitation or not (my guess would be yes).
3) We could explore a Media library dedicated search instead. I didn't go that far at this juncture.
My apologies but I just tried to search for content within one of our Catholic Light PDFs, (My search was https://www.dioceseofscranton.org/?s=U.S.+bishops+have+frank+exchange+with+pope+about+abuse+scandal)
I expected results to contain the following PDF: https://www.dioceseofscranton.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/September-20-2018.pdf
Nothing was returned in the search results.
So it seems as if the way you've modified the search does not achieve what we were hoping for.
Perhaps the Media library dedicated search is what we really need.
Please let me know if the Media library dedicated search is feasible.
Thanks,
Connie
Two things.
I had originally done this and demonstrated it working as a proof of concept sort of deal, here's what I found and how it might work. Later on in testing, recall that you discovered that the "Papal Blessing" was not showing up as a search result. This was due to this trial. To resolve the issue, I undid the search media changes.
Second, the media search I had demoed earlier would not have accounted for text/copy within a document, only the titles. So your search still would not have yielded any results, since the document name was "September-20-2018.pdf". I honestly do not know if searching within documents is possible or not, so for that much we will need to research and go to the drawing board.
The Plug-in that I originally asked about, wpsearch, is supposed to allow for searching within documents. I am thinking of investing the $99 to try it out to see if it works.
Wish it was a bit cheaper.
