Christ the King - Tampa, FL

Launch Instructions

Good morning Emily,

We are ready for you to launch the website! Below are the instructions for you to change in your DNS settings.

To facilitate the transition, all you will need to do is update two host records for http://www.ctk-tampa.org/.  Updating the domain name will point the site to the new server. You will need to make the following changes to your domain name host records:

Change the www and @ Host records to be A Name types that point to:104.156.48.29
By changing only the www and @ Host records, you will update the website only and not your email.

The industry standard is to say these changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate.  However, it's been my experience that you can usually see these changes within 2 hours.  You will know it was successful when visiting http://www.ctk-tampa.org/ brings up the site seen here: http://ctk-tampa.diocesanweb.org.

I have also copied some of my team in so that they are aware of when the switch should begin.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any additional help making the changes.

Great, thank you! I didn’t see anyone CCd on this email to reply-all to, either add them or let me know who to notify?? You mentioned the developer getting the big photo off the liturgy page, and adding that calendar feed to the News page? Will that be completed soon? TY!

Hi Veronica, our last emails crossed at the same time so wanted to make sure you got this. I can go ahead up update the records but wanted to be sure the below was being taken care of in the meantime?? Also, I was trying to hide the parish app posts over the weekend since they are from 2017 (by unchecking boxes…), but they kept reappearing. If the app shows the daily reading or something current I’m fine with it being there… will this be current once the site is live?

Here is a snippet of the panel I have in front of me – can you confirm which two I’m changing? TY!

Hi Emily,

The developer has fixed those 3 items. To see the changes, be sure to do a hard refresh by holding down Control and clicking F5.

Let me know if you have any other questions or if you have already made the DNS changes.

Thank you,

Great thanks – on the news page the large graphic is still at the bottom… before it wasn’t in the header location, but now it is so maybe that is still being worked on!

Not sure if you saw my last email, can you confirm the two spots I’m updating? This is my screen on HostGator… I’m here working, so as soon as I here back I will make the update. My IT guy isn’t here for me to confirm with, thank you!

Hi Emily,

We spotted that too and have updated it.

As for updating the records, our developer is actually leaving for the day, so you should hold off on making any changes until tomorrow morning. He will be in 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, so making the changes anytime before 2:00 pm will work.

I have put a dot next to the A record that he said should be changed first;

8:00 am totally works for us.

Looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow and kicking it all into gear!

Good morning Emily,

We're waiting to see if your changes propogate before determining what other records you should change.

Since I'm seeing webmail.ctk-tampa.org as an A record, what email service do you use currently?

Thank you,

Hi Emily,

The change hasn't propagated yet, so we're going to go ahead and make a quick update. On the DNS Record that you changed, there is a column called 'TTL', which stands for 'Time to Live'. Right now, the TTL for each A Record is 14400 seconds, or 4 hours. This means that any change made will take 4 hours to happen. To make taking the website live go a little bit faster, we recommend changing that TTL to something closer to 900, which comes out to about 15 minutes.

If you are able to change the TTL, make the change and let us know. That way, we should see the website propagate faster!

We'll let you know if there is anything else you need to do on your end!

Hi Emily,

Looks like the domain update still isn't propagating, so now we're going to update the rest of the A Records. It should be a simple fix. Edit every A Record with the IP adress of '192.185.52.197' to now point to '104.156.48.29'. Additionally, don't forget to change the TTL to 900, so that the domain propagates faster.

Sorry for all the trouble! As soon as the website is directed properly, I will get you taken live right away!

Hi Emily,

I think I may have found what might be causing the slowdown. You are changing the DNS records in Hostgator, but the domain is listed online as being registered to Network Solutions. This is likely what is causing the propagation to take a long time.

Would it be possible for us to get the login information for the account so we can get everything sorted and get the site live as soon as possible?

Hi Emily,

I went ahead and updated the A Records on Network Solutions. I set them to the lowest TTL that I was allowed (1 hour). It said that it may take up to 24 hours to fully switch over, but it will likely be much faster than that. I will keep you updated on any changes!
