Domain Transfer
Good morning!
I have a note that you may want to transfer your domain to Diocesan to hold. If so, we can do that now, just prior to launch, or we can wait until after launch to move it. Do you have a preference?
Thank you,

Good Morning Mary,
I spoke with Carolyn, our business manager, and she said our launch date would be a great time for Diocesan to take over the hosting of the domain.
Thank you for your help,
Kristin

So you want to wait until after the launch, if I understand correctly?
We'll just need to make certain, then, that you have the login for the domain account for launch day. We can either send you the launch instructions to make the change yourselves, or you can provide us with the login for the account and we'll make the changes to launch the site.
Thank you!

If we can make the switch at the same time, that would be great. Is that possible? I'm not sure what info you'll need.
Good Morning Mary,
Because I am unsure what is needed and why, what specifically do you need to do? It helps me learn.
Thank you,
Kristin

Good morning,
If we do the migration of the domain after launch, we usually wait a few days just to let everything settle before moving it.
Migrating a domain is pretty easy - we log into the current domain provider and ask for an "EPP code" - it's just a string of letters and numbers. We also have to unlock the domain and make it available to transfer.
Then we request from the company we use, eNom, a transfer and we enter the domain and the EPP code. Then we wait - and usually within 3-7 days, the domain transfers, or a get a "cancelled - and the reason why" message.
Some transfers go off without a hitch - no issues at all. Other times, we have to add back host records that may have dropped during the transfer (GoDaddy is the worst for that!) and there may be a short period of time where your site is down or your emails have a pause - it's usually a very short time (1-2 hours is typical with GoDaddy once we know there's an issue with the transfer) and during that time, nameservers around the world learn again where your site/domain are and how to find them. That's the general idea of what happens, and kind of generalized, but you get the idea! Usually, they transfer with no problems at all and you never even realize anything has changed.
But either way, to launch the site we'll need to log into your domain account and point the "A" record in the domain settings to our other server, because your new site is on our newer server, and your current site is on our first server, so we have to change out that IP address to tell the world to find your new site on the second server. So either our developer will log into your domain account and make the changes, or we can send instructions on what to change if someone there wants to do that on Launch day. And then a few days after launch, when everything looks good, we'd log in again to get the EPP code.
Let me know if you have any questions about the process, thank you!
